Day 1 SO and SUCH：湖畔ホテルの週末を振り返る

EmiとSarahが、湖畔の小さなホテルで過ごした週末を振り返ります。印象の強さを伝えるsoとsuch、その結果をつなぐthatに注目しましょう。

このレッスンの狙い

so + 形容詞・副詞、such + (a/an) + 形容詞 + 名詞を使い、感情や評価の強さと、その結果を伝える。

STEP 1　聞く前に場面を予測する

週末旅行の写真を見ながら、ホテル・景色・天候・カフェの印象を話す場面です。次のコア単語を手がかりにしましょう。

  • believe：信じる
  • wake up：目を覚ます
  • follow：道などをたどる
  • change：変わる
  • recommend：勧める

STEP 2　字幕なしで会話を聞く

1回目は「ホテルでよく眠れた理由」「雨のときに入った場所」「Emiがホテルを勧めた相手」をつかみましょう。

STEP 3　英文と日本語で確認する

Emi: I still can’t believe how peaceful that lakeside hotel was.
あの湖畔のホテルがどれほど静かだったか、今でも信じられないくらい。

Sarah: I know. It was so quiet that I slept for nine hours without waking up.
わかるわ。あまりに静かだったので、一度も目を覚まさず9時間眠ったもの。

Emi: And we had such a beautiful view from the room. I could see the water from my bed.
それに、部屋から本当に美しい景色が見えたわ。ベッドから湖が見えたもの。

Sarah: The morning light was so soft that the whole lake looked silver.
朝の光がとても柔らかかったので、湖全体が銀色に見えたわ。

Emi: It was such a relaxing place that I forgot to check my phone until lunchtime.
とてもくつろげる場所だったから、昼食までスマートフォンを確認するのを忘れていたの。

Sarah: That’s unusual for you. The staff were so thoughtful, too.
あなたには珍しいわね。スタッフも本当に気が利いていたわ。

Emi: Yes. They gave us such clear directions that we found the walking trail immediately.
ええ。とてもわかりやすい道案内をくれたので、すぐ散歩道を見つけられたわ。

Sarah: The trail was so easy to follow that we didn’t need the map after all.
道がとてもわかりやすかったので、結局地図は必要なかったわね。

Emi: But the weather changed so quickly in the afternoon.
でも午後、天気が本当に急に変わったわ。

Sarah: It did. There was such heavy rain that we had to wait in a small café.
そうね。とても激しい雨だったので、小さなカフェで待たなければならなかったわ。

Emi: Luckily, it was such a welcoming café. The owner even showed us some old photographs.
幸い、とても居心地のよいカフェだったわ。店主が昔の写真まで見せてくれたもの。

Sarah: And the apple cake was so good that you ordered another piece.
それに、アップルケーキがあまりにおいしくて、あなたはもう一切れ注文したわね。

Emi: I did. It was such a memorable weekend that I’ve already recommended the hotel to my sister.
そうしたわ。本当に心に残る週末だったから、もう妹にそのホテルを勧めたの。

Sarah: We should go back in autumn. The trees will be so colorful then.
秋にまた行きましょう。その頃は木々がとても色鮮やかになるわ。

STEP 4　キーフレーズを理解する

強さを前に置くso、まとまり全体を包むsuch

so quietはquietという性質の度合いを強めます。一方、such a beautiful viewは「a beautiful view」という名詞のまとまり全体を取り上げ、その印象の強さを示します。so / such … thatでは、その強さが次の出来事を引き起こす流れを作ります。

しゅみすけ

soは形容詞や副詞へ直接スポットライトを当て、suchは名詞を含む場面全体を持ち上げます。日本語訳を一つに決めるより、どこを強く見せているかを意識してください。

STEP 5　音のポイント

  • so quiet that / so soft that は、強調する形容詞を中心に一まとまりで聞きます。
  • such a は会話では滑らかにつながります。
  • thatは結果へ渡す橋なので、弱く短く発音されることがあります。
  • such heavy rainのように不可算名詞ではaを置きません。
