Day 1：There is / There are ― 新しくできたカフェを紹介する

近所に新しくできたカフェについて、友人同士が話しています。場所や設備について説明するThere is / There areを、実際の会話の中で聞き取ってみましょう。

STEP 1　聞く前に場面を予測する

登場人物：MikaとDaniel
場面：Mikaが、駅の近くに新しくできたカフェをDanielに紹介しています。

まずは英文を見ずに、「カフェはどこにあるか」「どんな設備があるか」を意識して聞いてください。すべての単語を聞き取る必要はありません。

STEP 2　字幕なしで会話を聞く

Mika: Have you seen the new café near the station?
駅の近くに新しくできたカフェ、見た？

Daniel: No, I haven’t. Where is it?
いや、まだ。どこにあるの？

Mika: It’s next to the bookstore. There is a small garden in front.
本屋さんの隣よ。正面に小さな庭があるの。

Daniel: Nice. Are there tables outside?
いいね。外にテーブルはある？

Mika: Yes, there are four tables. There is also a quiet room upstairs.
うん、テーブルが4つあるよ。2階には静かな部屋もあるの。

Daniel: Is there free Wi-Fi?
無料Wi-Fiはある？

Mika: Yes, and there are outlets near every table.
あるよ。それに、どのテーブルの近くにもコンセントがあるの。

Daniel: Great. Are there many people in the morning?
いいね。朝は人が多い？

Mika: Not really. There are only a few customers before nine.
それほどでもないよ。9時前なら、お客さんは数人しかいないの。

Daniel: That sounds perfect for work.
仕事をするのにちょうどよさそうだね。

Mika: It is. There are good sandwiches, too.

There is ＋ 1つのもの

認知文法で見る There is / There are

Thereは、ここでは単純に「そこ」と訳す言葉ではありません。まず聞き手の意識を、これから説明する場面へ向ける合図です。

その場面に1つのものを登場させるなら There is、複数のものを登場させるなら There are を使います。

• There is a small garden. ― 場面の中に「小さな庭」が1つ現れる
• There are four tables. ― 場面の中に「4つのテーブル」が現れる

日本語へ一語ずつ置き換えるより、場所の映像を思い浮かべ、その中へものを置く感覚で捉えてみましょう。

STEP 5　音のポイント

• There is は会話では「ゼアリズ」のようにつながります。
• There are は「ゼアラー」に近く、thereとareの境目が弱くなります。
• Is there は一語ずつ区切らず、「イズゼア」のようにつなげます。
• Are there は「アーゼア」のようなまとまりで聞きます。
• There are only a few… では、内容語のonly / few / customersを中心に聞くと意味をつかみやすくなります。

STEP 6　声に出して練習する

音声をもう一度再生し、次の順番で練習してください。

1. 英文を見ながら音声と同時に読む
2. 少し遅れて音声を追いかける
3. 英文を見ずにキーフレーズだけ繰り返す

置き換え練習
