カフェで美術展の思い出を話す二人：Day 1 Simple Past

Emiが先週末に訪れた美術展について、Sarahに話しています。Photo Journal 1より少し長い会話の中で、過去の状態を表す was / were と、過去の動作を尋ねる did を聞き取ります。

このレッスンの狙い

過去の場面へ視点を移し、「どんな状態だったか」と「何をしたか」を区別しながら会話の流れをつかむ。

STEP 1　聞く前に場面を予測する

EmiとSarahはカフェで、先週土曜日の美術展について話しています。次のコア単語を手がかりにしましょう。

  • be：ある・いる・状態にある
  • go：ある場所から離れて進む
  • meet：人と出会う
  • talk：言葉を交わす
  • take：写真を自分の手元に取り込む

STEP 2　字幕なしで会話を聞く

1回目は「どこへ行ったか」「誰と行ったか」「誰と話したか」の3点だけをつかみましょう。

STEP 3　英文と日本語で確認する

Sarah: How was the art exhibition last Saturday?
先週の土曜日の美術展はどうだった？

Emi: It was wonderful. It was in a small gallery near my station.
とてもよかったわ。私の最寄り駅の近くにある小さなギャラリーで開かれていたの。

Sarah: Was it crowded when you arrived?
あなたが着いたとき、混んでいた？

Emi: Not at first, but there were many people after lunch.
最初はそうでもなかったけれど、昼食後は人がたくさんいたわ。

Sarah: Did you go there alone?
一人で行ったの？

Emi: No, I went with my sister. She was very interested in the paintings.
いいえ、姉（妹）と行ったの。彼女は絵にとても興味を持っていたわ。

Sarah: Did you meet any of the artists?
アーティストの誰かに会った？

Emi: Yes, we did. One artist was there, and we talked with her for a few minutes.
ええ、会ったわ。アーティストが一人そこにいて、数分間その方と話したの。

Sarah: What did you talk about?
何について話したの？

Emi: We asked about her work. She was friendly, and her answers were very interesting.
作品について尋ねたの。彼女は親しみやすくて、答えもとても興味深かったわ。

Sarah: That sounds like a good afternoon. Did you take any photos?
いい午後だったみたいね。写真は撮った？

Emi: Yes, I did. I took a few in the lobby. Here, let me show you.
ええ、撮ったわ。ロビーで何枚か撮ったの。ほら、見せるね。

STEP 4　キーフレーズを理解する

was / were：過去の場面に状態を置く

It was wonderful. や There were many people. は、過去の場面に「どんな状態だったか」「何が存在したか」を置く表現です。現在の am / is は was、are は were に変わります。

did：過去の動作を取り出して尋ねる

Did you go there alone? の did が過去を担当します。そのため、後ろの動詞は went ではなく原形の go になります。

状態と動作を聞き分ける

Was it crowded? は会場の状態、Did you take any photos? はEmiが行った動作を尋ねています。be動詞と一般動詞のどちらを尋ねているかに注目しましょう。

しゅみすけ

was / were は、過去の場面に人や物の状態を置く表現です。did は、過去の場面から動作を取り出すスイッチです。did が過去を示すので、後ろの動詞は原形になります。

STEP 5　音のポイント

  • How was the …? は was the が弱くつながり、ひとかたまりに聞こえます。
  • Did you …? は /dɪdʒə/ に近くつながることがあります。
  • There were は二語を切り離さず、後ろの名詞までまとめて聞きましょう。
  • 状態を表す wonderful / crowded / interested / friendly にも注目します。

STEP 6　声に出して練習する

  1. It was in a small gallery near my station.
  2. Was it crowded when you arrived?
  3. There were many people after lunch.
  4. Did you meet any of the artists?
  5. She was friendly, and her answers were interesting.

置き換え練習

  • It was wonderful / relaxing / exciting.
  • There were many people / paintings / photos.
  • Did you go alone / meet anyone / take photos?
